Work is expected to start on Toowoomba’s first aerospace and defence precinct before the end of the year, after plans were approved by the council.
Wagner Corporation has been given the green light to start building its massive new project next door to Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport.
The multi-hectare precinct will feature Boeing as its anchor tenant, with the multinational aerospace giant to assemble its world-first MQ-28A Ghost Bat unmanned aircraft in Toowoomba.
The project will generate hundreds of millions for the region and employ more than hundreds of people, including more than 300 at the Boeing facility alone.
It comes less than six months after plans were lodged with the council, and nearly two months after the previous Federal Government announced a $450m deal to purchase seven of the Ghost Bats.
Wagner Corporation chairman John Wagner said earthworks would begin soon, with an eye for construction to start before the end of 2022.
“The next step from here is to finalise time frames and builders and so on — we’d like to get into construction ASAP,” he said.
“We’d definitely like to have construction start, Boeing is going through all their processes before they sign off on that.
“The project is a definite goer, we’ve got teams working on it so we’re certainly spending the money.”
Wagner Corp has been in discussions with several domestic and international companies about securing tenancies within the precinct.
“We’re getting close to signing people up and we’ll probably have another six to eight aerospace companies to support Boeing over the next couple of years, and big operators,” Mr Wagner said.
Boeing was contacted for comment.
