A prominent Toowoomba dentist has laid out plans for a new dental clinic on one of the city’s busiest intersections, which would be his 10th across Queensland.

Dr David Yu lodged plans with the Toowoomba Regional Council late last month to build a new clinic on the corner of James and West Streets in Newtown.

The new 200 sqm property will replace a home-based business on the corner, sitting opposite a GP and dental clinic and a future Officeworks showroom on either side of the intersection.

Dr Yu, who owns nine clinics across southeast Queensland including Gentle Dental at both Drayton and Highfields, said he believed the area was currently under-serviced.

“We’ve got nine in Queensland, but I’m Toowoomba based and Drayton was my first one,” he told NewsCorp.

“I thought that the site has got good exposure — there aren’t many clinics in that area.”

Dr Yu also flagged a possible new clinic in Toowoomba’s northern suburbs, subject to market conditions.

According to the report by Creating Planning’s Lynette Prince-Large, the proposed Newtown clinic will employ two dentists and four admin staff, five days a week.

It is expected to attract about eight visitors per day, or around 200 per month.

“The proposed dental practice is only small scale and because it will be low cost, the aim is for it to cater for the local residents regularly,” Ms Prince-Large’s report said.

“It will not impact on the dental surgery across West Street — if referral is required, it is a simple case of the client walking across the street.”

Because the application is impact-assessable, a public notification period will need to be carried out prior to a council decision.
