A single-storey home near a Toowoomba hospital is set to become short-term accommodation for cancer patients, after plans were lodged with the council.
Applicant Suke Investments Pty Ltd submitted the proposal this week for an existing home on North Street in Rockville.
The site is directly opposite St Andrew’s Toowoomba Hospital, which has an extensive oncology department.
According to the planning report by Swep Consulting, the home would be used by travelling patients of the hospital and their families – as many as six at a time.
“The proposal involves the use of the existing dwelling as a self-contained, short term accommodation facility, rented out as a whole to cancer patients attending St Andrew’s Hospital,” the report said.
“The dwelling will be retained in its current form, and the streetscape character will remain unchanged.”
It comes just a few months after a set of units was converted into Airbnb accommodation, also on North Street in Rockville.
The rise in Toowoomba homes being converted into short-stays has earned the attention of the council, which has floated charging different rates for the homeowners.
