A boutique burger chain plans to open its first Toowoomba store soon, as part of plans lodged for a major fast-food precinct.
Mad Burger, which has several locations around Brisbane, submitted a development application with the Toowoomba Regional Council this week to build a new standalone drive-through restaurant on Bridge Street in Wilsonton.
The area is already known as a hub for fast food, with McDonald’s, KFC, Hungry Jack’s, Subway, Red Rooster and Super Rooster within 200m of the site.
The 200sqm building will include a drive-through lane plus 10 parking spots and several waiting bays.
“The proposed building will have minimal impact upon, and will positively contribute to, the existing streetscape,” the report by Alpha Planning Applications said.
The applicant also submitted an economic needs assessment to justify the development.
The report by Norling Consulting concluded any impacts felt by the introduction of Mad Burger would be mitigated by growing demand for fast food within the Wilsonton area.
“The Mad Burger chain is one of a number of premium burger chains that have recently exploded in southeast Queensland, taking advantage of the growth in demand for fast food and distinguishing themselves from the more established budget burger fast food outlets,” it said.
“The level of planning needed for the proposed development to locate on the subject site is considered to be moderate to strong.
“There is moderate to strong growth in population and demand for fast food in the catchment area, particularly from the secondary area.”
The council has yet to respond to the proposal.
