THE Queensland Government has committed millions to upgrade a major rail line that runs through the Darling Downs.

Work will soon commence on upgrades to the West Moreton rail line.

A $48 million project by the Queensland Government will pave the way for increased freight opportunities along the West Moreton rail line.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said once complete, the track structure upgrade project would allow an increase in freight tonnage to travel along the line.

“Because of Queenslanders’ response to COVID-19, the Palaszczuk Government has been able to get on with the state’s plan for economic recovery – and that means bolstering our important freight networks to support industry and create jobs,” Mr Bailey said.

“We’re making this significant investment to ensure this vital freight and coal corridor is equipped to withstand future demand.”

Mr Bailey said as part of the three-year project, 37km of track between Jondaryan and Brigalow would be upgraded from 41kg rail on steel and timber sleepers to 50kg rail on concrete sleepers.

“The reconditioned track will provide a more resilient asset for our freight partners and future coal traffic demand,” he said.

“The West Moreton line is also home to the Westlander passenger service and these upgrades will ensure the ongoing reliability of this valued service for locals.”

Mr Bailey said earlier this month, about 300 Queensland Rail staff and contractors carried out major track construction works along the line during a week-long closure.

“Taking advantage of the closure, crews installed 1,000 concrete sleepers on approaches to rail bridges, completed track and structure inspections, level crossing signalling works and reconditioned 4.4km of track,” he said.

“The team also anchored 26km of existing timber sleepers and installed 3,000 additional timber sleepers.”

Mr Bailey said the project was progressing well with almost 20 per cent of works completed and a further two closures planned to be completed before the critical summer season.

The project is scheduled for completion by mid-2023
