Margaret St rail crossing intersection to close next week for upgrades

A MAJOR Toowoomba road will close to motorists next week as rail line upgrades are completed.

More than 30 Queensland Rail crew will work on a $400,000 project to improve safety at Toowoomba’s Margaret Street level crossing next week (October 4 to 8).

The upgrade will involve cutting, moving and welding new and existing rail infrastructure at the level crossing.

Transport Minister Mark Bailey said in an effort to minimise disruption, the Queensland Rail project would be completed concurrent with the Toowoomba Regional Council’s upgrade to the water main at the location.

The crossing will be closed to motorists and pedestrians while these important works are undertaken.

Traffic control will be in place to assist motorists with diversions, with the Margaret Street level crossing closed from about 9pm on October 4 until about 3pm on October 8, weather permitting.

Vehicle detours will be in place via Russell and Herries streets for the duration of the closure.

Pedestrian access will be available via Grand Central shopping centre (during trading hours) and via the footpath between Victoria and Dent streets.
