The developer behind a “leafy” subdivision proposal in a growth part of Toowoomba is hoping the new 17-hectare estate will take the pressure off the city’s housing market.
The 148-lot estate on Kleinton Road in Highfields has been submitted to the Toowoomba Regional Council for approval.
Precinct Urban Planning’s Andrew Bullen, who is representing a consortium of investors for the project, said lots would be not smaller than 600 sqm to match existing parcel sizes available in Highfields.
“What they’re really trying to tap into is a spacious urban environment,” he said.
“The future of Highfields is lots that are between 600 sqm and 1000 sqm.
“It complements (the surrounding area) so it’s a leafy residential environment.”
Mr Bullen said a large collection of trees would be retained as part of a new open space and drainage corridor, while there would also be a heavy emphasis on mature street trees.
“They want to bring in mature street trees so it’s very established quickly,” he said.
“There is a lining of trees that are already there, so it’s been designed to retain them as part of the corridor.”
Council planning chair Councillor Megan O’Hara Sullivan said she had been briefed on the project and was interested to see its progression.
“It sounds really exciting, particularly the emphasis on retaining the natural features,” she said.
