Darling Downs Health has lodged plans for the approximately $1.8 billion Toowoomba Hospital Redevelopment project with the State Government.
Darling Downs Health has prepared an environmental assessment report in support of a request for a Ministerial Infrastructure Designation for the project.
The MID process is basically akin to lodging a development application through a council.
The request for a MID is also open to submissions from the public.
According to documents lodged with the State Government, the MID, if approved, will facilitate the relocation of the Toowoomba Hospital to the 74 hectare Baillie Henderson site.
At its current site, the Toowoomba Hospital is at capacity and has no further room to expand.
The redevelopment of the hospital at Baillie Henderson will bring “a world-class facility to the Toowoomba and Darling Downs Region” planning documents said.
It will include a new day surgery building, new main acute hospital, new central facility management building, new acute mental health building, the refurbishment and reutilisation of existing buildings, and associated hospital and health support structure.
The documents also said that an MID would allow Darling Downs Health to gradually move services from the current Toowoomba Hospital across town to the Baillie Henderson site as a mechanism of “relieving pressure on the already at capacity (Toowoomba Hospital)”, irrespective of whether funding had been allocated.
In January, Darling Downs Health was in the process of putting forward a funding submission to the State Government for the project.
“The intention is to move as many services as possible away from the (Toowoomba Hospital) to open up clinical spaces until a new hospital is funded.”
The proposal for the new hospital includes 402 overnight inpatient beds, compared to the 317 currently available at the Toowoomba Hospital.
