ANTI-PORNOGRAPHY leader Letitia Shelton has warned parents not to become complacent even with popular streaming services like Netflix, given the rise in programs showing full-frontal nudity like Sex/Life.

The controversial figure who first started the City Free From Porn campaign in 2016 and has gone on to release her own book How to Talk to Your Kids About Pornography.

Now she has been announced as one of the 2021 Awards Australia Community Group of the Year nominees.

“We’ve been working on the City Free From Porn campaign for the past five years to raise awareness around the harm porn is causing our community,” Ms Shelton said.

“This year we’ve had a big focus on helping empower parents on how to talk to their kids about porn and have delivered 7000 of the books to schools around Toowoomba.”

The leader of the anti-porn campaign said “porn is grooming the next generation of women beaters” as she believes the industry promotes violence against others, particularly females.

And while Ms Shelton’s views have been labelled controversial by some, she said she had received support from community leaders, as well as a phone call from the president of France.

Despite the growing popularity of television shows like Netflix’s Sex/Life, a series that portrays sex scenes with full-frontal nudity, Ms Shelton said she felt those shows were equally problematic for younger generations to watch.

“I’d encourage parents to really do their research and be aware of what’s coming through social media and Netflix to see the damage that this type of material does to those young brains and how it’s influencing their relationships,” she said.

“I’m not the moral police, and I can’t ban porn, but I want people to be aware of what it is and that it’s having an adverse effect on our kids and what they think sex is.

“Unfortunately teaching consent will not fix the problem because they’re young people and their brains aren’t fully developed.”

Nominated by Selena Protheroe, Ms Shelton was recognised for her work throughout the campaign which includes delivering rallies and riding from Darwin to Broome to raise more than $75,000 for the campaign.

Awards Australia will announce Queensland winners for seven categories later this year, with each walking away with $1000 cash and $1000 in Bartercard currency.

Finalists will then attend the Awards Gala Presentation Dinner on November 5.
