BREAKING: Toowoomba Regional Councillor Nancy Sommerfield has announced she is running for pre-selection with the LNP for the seat of Toowoomba South.
She told The Chronicle at about 9.45am she was not allowed to make any further comments to the media about her consideration to nominate, but at 11.35am said she had been given permission to speak.
Cr Sommerfield will be contesting the LNP pre-selection for the seat against Heritage Bank head of banking David Janetzki.
EARLIER: Residents are waiting to find out if Toowoomba Regional Councillor Nancy Sommerfield will nominate for the LNP pre-selection for Toowoomba South by today's deadline.
After months of speculation during the local election campaign Cr Sommerfield has waited until the final days of nominations to announce her intentions.
If Cr Sommerfield does nominate, and win the LNP vote, it could mean Craig Stibbard is elected to council to replace her.
Residents voiced their disappointment in the political system, allowing an elected member for council to change ranks and go for a state seat, just a month after being voted in.
Stacy Sollitt said Cr Sommerfield had made a commitment to the electorate.
"Doing this just slaps them in the face. You got voted in, so do the full term," she said.
Patrick Blake said everyone who voted for her in the local government election had now wasted a vote.
Pauline Williams said residents voted for her in good faith to serve her term on the council.
"It is most disappointing that you are abandoning the duties for which you were elected," she said.
Alex Law said the continued changes between LNP federal, state and local members this year felt like a game of musical chairs.
Cr Sommerfield, along with businessmen Sam Wright and Kenneth Wagner have until 5pm today to nominate.
Heritage Bank head of banking David Janetzki has confirmed he will be running for the seat, with residents experiencing déjà vu from his failed bid for pre-selection in 2011 against John McVeigh.
Now with Mr McVeigh vacating the seat to try for the Groom seat, Mr Janetzki is again trying his hand.
Cr Sommerfield was not available for comment.
