Residents living with a disability will soon enjoy better access to Yarraman Memorial Pool with work on a new changing room scheduled to begin this year.
Councillor James O’Shea said the new changing room would be built to ensure access and mobility for people with disabilities and to meet current Australian standards.
He said the project was another step towards bringing the council’s older facilities in line with modern building standards under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and meet community expectations.
“Our region boasts a number of great community-based pools and aquatic centres, such as the Yarraman Memorial Pool,” Mr O’Shea said.
“These facilities have long served the community but were constructed at a time when building access standards for people with disabilities were vastly different to todays.
“We are pleased these works are going ahead to be more inclusive of all residents and to improve the experience for more members of our community who enjoy the pool in Yarraman.”
Mr O’Shea said the new changing room would be constructed in addition to the existing changing rooms and would include a wheelchair access path from the roadside entrance to the aquatic centre.
Construction is expected to be completed by early 2022.
