Two new dog off-leash areas could be created across the region, with the Toowoomba Regional Council set to vote on whether to endorse the plans this week.

Community consultation has been completed for proposed off-leash areas in Oakey and Kingsthorpe, with feedback mostly supportive of the concepts.

The Oakey space would be located at a park on Cory St, while the Kingsthorpe area would be based in the southern detention area portion of Rosalie Walk.

TRC senior landscape architect Ingrid Steinhardt’s report revealed the Kingsthorpe off-leash area was only supported by the local community if fencing was installed.

“Fencing of the Rosalie Walk, Kingsthorpe DOLA (dog off-leash area) can be achieved within current capital budget allocations, with some revisions and omissions in scope to other proposed park embellishments such as footpath and shelter provision,” the report said.

“The majority of respondents to this proposal objected to it, but only if the DOLA was not properly fenced.

“These objections could be resolved by ensuring the DOLA is a fenced DOLA with adequate signage.”

Only one person objected to the Oakey off-leash area concept, but their concerns reportedly related to poor dog and behaviour rather than the concept of a designated space.

The council will vote on the matter at Wednesday’s committee meeting.
