The Toowoomba Regional Council has submitted a development application for a new waste facility in the northern tip of the region.

Plans for an upgraded waste management facility at Yarraman have moved to the next stage following lodgement of the development application for the facility.

Water and waste portfolio leader Cr Nancy Sommerfield said feedback from residents had enabled the council to make changes to the design to better suit the community.

“We recently undertook community consultation regarding upgrading the facility,” she said.

The feedback we received was extremely positive and provided better insight into the specific needs of the community.

“There were a couple of suggestions raised by residents and these have now been taken into consideration as part of the updated plans.

“The development application has been lodged – when the plans are approved, we’ll prepare the ‘design and construct’ documents to get the project ready for tender by the middle of this year.”

Cr Sommerfield said the current Yarraman landfill was predicted to run out of space in the next few years, which was driving the need to upgrade the facility.

“The upgrade will see the construction of our region’s first tier four waste management facility,” she said.

“The new facility will be built on the site of the existing landfill and designed as a smaller version of the region’s state-of-the-art flagship, the Greater Toowoomba Waste Management Facility.

“Not everything will be new — the garden area used by members of the community will remain at the new facility, continuing a tradition that is popular with Yarraman residents.”

Cr Sommerfield said the facility was designed to allow improved recycling opportunities, reducing the volume of waste that ends up in our landfills.

“In accordance with the recently adopted Waste Management Strategy 2021, the council is working towards a target of 90 per cent of waste diverted from landfill through waste avoidance, reuse and recycling by 2050,” she said.
