Toowoomba Regional Council to begin works upgrading Emu Creek Landfill into waste transfer station

An upgrade to a landfill that was due to take place in 2025 has been brought forward after the council received a $151,000 grant.

Works to upgrade the Emu Creek Landfill into a waste transfer station will soon begin.

As part of Toowoomba Regional Council’s Waste Infrastructure Plan, the upgrade was originally scheduled to occur in 2025 but has been brought forward after the council was successful in receiving $151,000 in funding as part of the State Government’s Local Government Levy Ready Program Round 2.

With works commencing in March and expected to be completed in June 2021, Water and Waste portfolio lead Cr Nancy Sommerfield said the upgraded facility would provide a neater and cleaner solution for the community to dispose of their waste, while better protecting the environment.

“Over the past few years we’ve taken large strides in waste and this is the next step in that journey,” Cr Sommerfield said.

“Our Greater Toowoomba Waste Management Facility has set the standard for how we can operate at a large scale, and we have taken a tiered approach in how this model is applied to smaller communities. Emu Creek will be a tier six facility, and while it will share some fundamental design features of our larger sites, will be scaled down to most efficiently serve the Emu Creek community.

“We’re investing in our smaller communities to create a network of facilities, transforming the way waste is managed which has resulted in a reduction in the amount of waste disposed to landfill.

“Once the new site is up and running, the existing landfill will be sealed and closed.”

During construction of the waste transfer station, the existing facility will continue to function as normal with no changes to customer access arrangements and opening times.

While works are occurring, we ask all users to please take note of signage when on site.
