A subsidiary of telecommunications giant Telstra has lodged plans for a new satellite dish in the heart of the Toowoomba CBD to improve digital services.
Amplitel, which is part of the Telstra Group, has lodged plans with the council to install a “telecommunications facility” on the corner of Hume and Woodlawn Street in Toowoomba City.
According to the planning report by Downer EDI, the new 1.8m-wide satellite dish would support “future Telstra products and services”.
“Amplitel’s satellite dish rollout will typically involve using an existing Telstra exchange facility and will require a 1.8m diameter dish to be erected from ground level,” the report said.
“The purpose of this site will connect to a wider ground network using Telstra’s infrastructure across the country.
“The proposed site will offer the best location in terms of access, minimal environmental impacts, build constraints, and offers the best location to satisfy Telstra’s ground network earth station drivers.
“The new network will be operated in the 27.5 GHz and 31 GHz frequency bandwidth that allows for greater range of satellite radio coverage.”
The site is already a Telstra exchange building and is listed on Amplitel’s website as an infrastructure tower.
The report said the dish will be 2.4m above the ground.
The council has yet to respond to the application with an information request.
