Council tweaks Julia St car park access

PARTS of Julia St are being changed from one-way to two-way by Toowoomba Regional Council in a bid to improve car parking access to the new Julia St car park.

PARTS of Julia St are being changed from one-way to two-way by Toowoomba Regional Council in a bid to improve car parking access to the new Julia St car park.

Council workers are today converting approximately 25 metres of Julia St.

Infrastructure Services committee chair Cr Carol Taylor said council staff would be working to complete footpath and road resurfacing works, along with altering signage and linemarking in Julia St.

"I believe this change will improve access to the car park and eliminate some of the safety issues that have been experienced since the car park opened," she said.

"Some people have been entering the car park from Hume St going the wrong way up the one-way street.

"This change should avert that and make access easier.

"We thank motorists for their cooperation and awareness of the changes while these works are underway," she said.

Julia St car park will now have three separate entry/exit points.

The driveway closest to the Empire Theatre will be an entry point only, the driveway near Aldersgate Crt is exit only with a left turn on to Hume St and the driveway in Julia St will be an exit and entrance point.

Cr Carol Taylor said council was continuing to improve parking options in the inner city to help retailers.

"There are pressures at work in the CBD at the moment in terms of development and Council has been refining its approach to parking in the inner city," Cr Taylor said.

"This change is just one more in a raft of changes designed to encourage longer-term parking for workers on the outskirts of the city and use the inner city for what is designed for… retail shopping."
