The father of a teenager critically injured after a hoon driver lost control and ploughed into a group of people says his son was in the “wrong place at the wrong time”.
Police and paramedics were called to the intersection of Beattie Rd and Waterway Dr in Coomera on the northern Gold Coast just before 9am on Sunday.
Gold Coast police Superintendent Brett Jackson said a black BMW lost control and veered off to the side of the road before colliding with a barrier where a number of people were watching.
An 18-year-old male suffered a significant leg injury and was in a critical condition while a 17-year-old male also sustained a leg injury.
Both are being treated at the Gold Coast University Hospital.
The 18-year-old victim’s father posted to social media that his son had undergone a five-hour surgery.
“He loves his cars and goes to car meets all the time,” he wrote on Facebook.
“Unfortunately, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
His mother also wrote on Facebook: “He was just doing what he loves, he’s all about cars.”
Terrifying footage showed the car leaving the event before it swerved and lost control, crashing into a barrier.
Superintendent Jackson said the vehicle had been seized by the Forensic Crash Unit and would undergo further testing.
He said the driver, a 21-year-old man, has been spoken to by police and was assisting them with their investigation but would likely face charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
The car meet was hosted by a local cafe to raise money for a woman battling cancer. They have since announced they would not be holding events again until further notice.
Superintendent Jackson said there had been reports of illegal hooning in the area in the lead up to the incident.
“I don’t have information to suggest how many other vehicles were involved but there were reports there was some illegal hooning,” he said.
“All of that will be subject to the investigation
“Police will be looking at dashcam and CCTV footage from the area to identify any other vehicles involved.
“We take this very seriously and this just highlights that significant injuries can occur when things don’t go to plan.”
Superintendent Jackson described the incident as “extremely disappointing”.
“There was no rhyme or reason for this to occur and it’s going to change many lives and it’s something we don’t want to see,” he said.
“This is a clear example why we don’t permit this because drivers are not trained and the vehicles do not have safety equipment and viewing areas are not behind safe platforms.
“The people injured have a long and difficult road ahead for themselves and their families and that is why we don’t condone this behaviour.”
