Teenager Grace Farley still in critical condition in Princess Alexandra Hospital after horror Toowoomba crash, set for major surgery

A “sweet, beautiful” teenager involved in a horrific Darling Downs crash has a “50-50” chance of surviving her injuries as she is prepped for make-or-break surgery.

Grace Farley had only moved to Toowoomba from Tasmania eight months ago, trying to find herself and earn a little money working at a family friend’s business.

Now the “sweet, beautiful” girl is facing the fight of her life in hospital after suffering horrific injuries in a single-vehicle crash on Mackenzie Street in East Toowoomba early on Saturday.

The next 24 hours will be crucial for Ms Farley, who has been described as an “innocent soul” caught in the middle of nightmare.

Her older sister Ebony Farley said the 18-year-old, who has been in an induced coma since the incident, had already gone through multiple surgeries and had several organs removed.

By all accounts, that she is still alive is nothing short of a miracle - and a testament to her toughness.

“At the Toowoomba Hospital, she used a whole blood supply before she was flown to Brisbane,” Ebony told News Corp Australia.

“She somehow made the trip to the Princess Alexandra Hospital, but she was still using a whole lot of blood.

“The main thing that was killing her was a main artery in her chest — somehow (the doctors in Brisbane) stopped the bleeding.

“In terms of surgeries, her small bowel they’ve taken the majority off — they’ve already taken out her spleen and a kidney.

“She’s also on dialysis because the other kidney isn’t functioning, neither is her liver.”

The family, which includes Grace’s twin Matilda, their older brother Ben, mother Joanne and father Nick (who lives in Queensland), nearly all flew up from Tasmania on Sunday night with the prospect she wouldn’t be alive.

Ebony paid tribute to the first responders, doctors and medical staff who gave her little sister a fighting chance.

“I can’t thank them enough, if it wasn’t for them she wouldn’t have a chance,” she said.

She said Grace was now being prepped for a “make-or-break” operation on Tuesday to re-attach what’s left of her small intestine.

“She’s still very critical, (Tuesday) they’re focusing on reconnecting her bowel,” Ebony said.

“(It’s) a 50-50 that she’ll make it through.

“If they manage to get the bowel to reconnect and there are no bleeds, it could go well.

“When we were flying over, we were preparing for her not to be (alive) but she’s here and she’s fighting (and) we’re all here rooting for her.”

The forensic crash unit is still investigation the incident, which also left the 20-year-old male driver in a critical condition in hospital.

Ms Farley’s 18-year-old friend is also recovering in Toowoomba in a stable condition.

The teen said she and Grace had been offered a lift home by the man in his car from a local pub.

A GoFundMe campaign has already raised more than $2000.

In a GoFundMe page posted to help cover future medical expenses, family friend and organiser Ruby Day said Ms Farley’s condition had improved since Sunday.

“As you all know Grace is the most kind genuine person and doesn’t deserve to be in the current state she is in,” Ms Day wrote.

“Although her injuries are extreme she has overcome two of the main injuries that were playing the main factors in killing her.

Ms Farley’s friend, who is also 18, was taken to Toowoomba Hospital in a stable condition.

The friend described to News Corp Australia the moment she found Ms Farley just minutes after the incident.

“I saw her lying down on the ground (on the road), moaning with pain – she couldn’t move, couldn’t talk,” the girl said.

A spokeswoman from Metro South Health confirmed Ms Farley was now in a critical but stable condition.

The Queensland Police said the forensic crash unit was still investigating the crash.
