East Toowoomba single-vehicle crash leaves two teens in critical condition

Police are investigating a serious crash on the Darling Downs that split a vehicle into two pieces, leaving three people injured, including two in a critical condition.

UPDATE: Police will probe the cause of a serious crash in an inner-city Toowoomba suburb that split a car into two pieces and left two young people in critical conditions.

The Forensic Crash Unit is currently investigating the site of the horror incident on Mackenzie Street in East Toowoomba, which was reported just after midnight on Saturday.

Police said initial investigations suggested the blue 2007 Ford Fairmont was heading northbound on Mackenzie Street when it left the road and crashed into a tree.

Initial reports from fire crews indicated the car had been “torn in two” by the collision, but no occupants were trapped in the wreckage.

A 20-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman were taken to Toowoomba Hospital in serious conditions.

The man was then flown to Redcliffe Hospital in the LifeFlight SGAS rescue helicopter.

Another 18-year-old woman was also taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Police have called on residents who saw the vehicle prior to the crash or had relevant CCTV or dashcam footage to come forward.

EARLIER: Two teenagers are in a critical condition after a serious single-vehicle crash in a wealthy suburb of Toowoomba that caused their vehicle to “split in two”.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident on Mackenzie Street in East Toowoomba just after midnight on Saturday, with the crash occurring between Campbell and Dunmore Streets.

QFES personnel reported the vehicle hit a skip bin before colliding with a tree, leaving it “torn in two”.

Incredibly, none of the three 18-year-old occupants were trapped in the vehicle.

Police and fire crews closed off Mackenzie Street for a period of time to assess the scene and collect pieces of the vehicle.

Critical care paramedics treated a female for “significant multi-system trauma”, while also working on a male with significant head injuries.

They were both rushed to Toowoomba Hospital in a critical condition.

Another female was taken to the same hospital in a stable condition, suffering from shoulder and pelvic injuries.
