Toowoomba MPs David Janetzki, Trevor Watts, say city must feature in hosting successful 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games bid

Brisbane and southeast Queensland has been declared the “preferred” city to host the 2032 Olympic Games, and Toowoomba MPs say it’s an opportunity for the region to get the infrastructure it needs.

Toowoomba MPs David Janetzki and Trevor Watts have called on the State Government to ensure the city features in the hosting of a successful Brisbane Olympic Games bid in 2032.

Southeast Queensland is looking increasingly likely to be the host of the Olympiad in 11 years’ time, with the IOC designating Brisbane as the “preferred” city.

Mr Janetzki, the deputy LNP leader and Toowoomba South MP, said the games bid was the perfect opportunity to ensure the region received key transport and sporting infrastructure that could be used beyond the games.

“It is an opportunity for us to get rail, better sporting infrastructure, better road infrastructure,” he said.

“This is a key moment for our region and I believe we can make every post a winner.

“The State Government needs to do everything in its power to get across the line in its bid, and start planning for this infrastructure.”

Mr Janetzki said mountain biking and fast rail were the obvious infrastructure opportunities, but said Toowoomba needed to be involved in some capacity.

“There is already a culture of mountain biking, but more than that, we can be a feeder into the southeast corner, for teams and for them to base themselves in the lead-up to the Olympics,” he said.

“Toowoomba must be included in the planning for the Olympic Games, for the infrastructure we need, but also for the value we can offer to the experience in the southeast corner.

“If we get it right, Toowoomba can play a vital role in making a wonderful Olympic Games.”

Mr Watts agreed with his colleague, calling the games a great opportunity for the Garden City.

“Investment in public transport infrastructure is really important for Toowoomba, and it’s a great opportunity to get it moving forward so we have all the opportunities, and it will service the Olympic Games,” he said.

“It will allow people to travel to Brisbane in 45 minutes on a train.”
