Hundreds of Muslims gathered at the Toowoomba Mosque on Wednesday to celebrate the end of Ramadan with Eid Al-Fitr.
The festival marks the end of a month of Ramadan fasting and is observed by 2 billion Muslims around the world.
In Toowoomba, both buildings at the corner of the mosque on West and South St filled up in the Autumn early morning air for the Eid Al-Fitr prayers.
Muslims from across the community gathered to listen to prayers, a sermon, share a meal together, and pass sweets to each other.
Organisers estimated almost 2000 people attended from more than 30 countries, from Malaysia to Sudan, Syria to Sierra Leone.
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Muslim calendar, is one of the most sacred times for Muslims.
Ramadan is believed to be the time that the Holy Qur’an was sent down from heaven “as a guidance for men and women, a declaration of direction, and a means of salvation.”
Toowoomba Mosque Imam Dr Muhammad Aminul Islam Azhari said this year’s sermon focused on humanitarian aspects, being good to neighbours, friends, family and youth.
“We instructed our youth to lead a good life - to sleep early, to wake up early and to be our bright future as they are our real future,” Dr Azhari said.
He said the community here is welcoming, not just between the Muslims, but also with the wider community, from people with other faiths, or people with no faith.
“So many of us we don’t know and sometimes we are enemies to what we don’t know,” he said.
“So we invite all our brothers and sisters to visit to the Imam and discuss with us and talk to us to reduce our distance.”
After the morning prayers, families and friends spent the day visiting each other, eating and sharing their own individual traditions as observed by their own country and culture.
