Five hundred racegoers travelled from across the country and braved the steep slopes to help raise money for Toowoomba charities at this year’s Run the Range Milne Bay Challenge.
Hosted by the Toowoomba Metropolitan Rotary Club, the annual event was held at the weekend on May 7.
Brisbane woman Angela De Gunst participated in the event alongside friends Lin Rodrigo and Leyre Farrar with the intention to hit up the region’s wineries after the race.
The trio, who are part of social club We Walk for Wine, have taken part in several fun runs across the country over the past decade.
“Having a wine at the end is kind of our reward but we didn’t do our research and all the wineries were closed,” Ms De Gunst said.
“We just went to the pub in Gatton and had a beer instead.”
Completing the 15km track in about three hours, Ms De Gunst said the feeling of accomplishment and scenic trail made all the difference.
It brought back memories for the three women who first took part in the event seven years ago.
“I wasn’t looking forward to the all the hills but even though we were seven years older I think we did a better job this time round … and we were still able to walk afterwards,” she said.
Event director Tressa Lindenberg said the event had been running for the past nine years and was originally called the Kokoda Challenge.
“It was nice to have great weather this year after we almost got flooded out last time,” she said.
“People travelled from the Gold Coast and Tassie and some even came from Townsville on a Bonza flight.”
Completing the 15km race in just over an hour was Tasmanian man Jeremy Hunt who also won the 7km at the event in 2022.
The event raised $45,000 for 14 Toowoomba charities with Protea Place raising the highest amount totalling $10,000.
Hutchinson Builders was the event’s major sponsor.
