The aroma of smoked, slow cooked and barbecue meats wafting over Garden City can only mean one thing: Meatstock is back in town.
Making the trip from Caboolture, and dressed for the occasion, were friends Craig Blank, Jason Peace and Dean Hoey who decided to camp at the showgrounds for the two day celebration of all things smoked, slow cooked and barbecued.
“We’re only amateurs when it comes to barbecuing so we thought it’d be a good chance to learn different styles,” Mr Blank said.
“It’s our first time to Meatstock, we’ve been to Toowoomba before, but we thought it’d be a good boys trip together and it’s been a great time.”
Decked out in matching outfits aptly emblazoned with a variety of barbecued meats, Mr Blank said they found their unique getup online and knew they all had to dress for the occasion.
“We’ve had a lot of people come up to us and get photos with us while we’ve been here, the outfits have definitely been a hit,” Mr Blank said.
While the food definitely took centre stage at Meatstock, it wasn’t the only form of entertainment on show.
Professional eaters from across the country took part in the Slider Throwdown, with the country’s top ranked professional eater James Webb, otherwise known as JWebby Can Eat, demolishing 16 pork sliders in less than 10 minutes to claim the $1000 top prize.
Away from the food, a popular interactive display was Jason Martin’s 1938 Studebaker President hotrod, which was kitted out as an art car.
Mr Martin said it was his stepdaughter Mila Morgan who was the inspiration behind the installation, as she wanted to express her creative side with the vintage vehicle as her canvas.
“We discussed the rules that she could only draw on the Studebaker with the chalk pens I gave her and she spent a number of nights in the shed with me drawing away,” Mr Martin said.
“Then when the 2022 Meatstock event came around with a rod and rumble car show, I instantly wanted the Stude in the show but had a decision to make, clean Mila’s art work off or leave it on. So I asked Mila what we should do, she wanted to leave the artwork on the car no matter what.”
Mr Martin said he came up with the idea of making the Studebaker an interactive Art Car so that everyone could draw whatever they liked.
“Needless to say 2022 was a massive hit and the Stude was covered by the awesome crowd including some of the bands. In the lead up to this year’s Meatstock event I spoke with Jay Beaumont to see if we should include the Art Car again this year and place it in a better location,” he said.
“Jay agreed to have it included this year and Mila once again started drawing on the Stude the second it was washed and clean but this year she drew her favourite ones from last year’s event.”
