The heavens stayed shut on Sunday morning, much to the delight of hundreds of residents who filled the Toowoomba CBD for the city’s largest celebration of Irish culture.
Nearly 200 people took part in the annual St Patrick’s Day Parade, which snaked through city streets before arriving at the Irish Club Hotel for more festivities.
Along with the floats and traditional Irish dancers, the parade was joined by the Caledonian Pipe Band.
Darling Downs Irish Club president Aileen Cater-Steel said the event was a reminder of the important role immigrants from the Emerald Isle had played in the foundation of Toowoomba.
“It’s all about the culture, the history and the traditions of Ireland, but everybody is welcome; it’s about having fun and meeting new people,” she said.
“A lot of people from Ireland settled here in the early days, but there are a lot of younger Irish people here and they contribute to the club and we treasure them.”
