The annual Mother’s Day Classic fun run wasn’t just a chance for Karen Pomfrett to spend time with her son Matt — it also took on a special significance for her and her family.

The pair were among more than 300 residents who ran or walked around Middle Ridge Park on Sunday to raise thousands for breast and ovarian cancer research.

Ms Pomfrett said she took part after witnessing her sister Gaye Shaw go through her own cancer battle.

“This is our first time – my son nominated us — my sister actually is a survivor of breast cancer and that’s what motivated (Matt) to do it,” she said.

Ms Pomfrett also relished the time with her son, noting how hard it is to do things together.

“As much as he’s at home with us, it’s a rare thing because we’re all busy in life, so to spend that special time with him is lovely,” she said.

When asked for the favourite thing about his mum, Mr Pomfrett had both a joke and a real answer.

“She cooks me dinner,” he laughed.

“Seriously, whenever I need her, she’s always there and she always goes above and beyond for me.”

Event co-organiser Leesa Finch said she was confident the team would beat last year’s total after witnessing a huge bump in attendance.

“We were up around 300 — I haven’t seen the final number but up around 300, which is significantly more than last year,” she said.

“Last year we raised $14,500, so we’re hoping to beat that which I’m sure, looking around me, we will.

“The vibe has been fabulous, everyone’s really happy and everyone got here nice and early to see all the entertainment and everyone’s still hanging around, which is always a good sign.”
