Truck driver dies at scene of crash at Oxford Crest retirement village
The driver of a truck has died at the scene of a crash in which his vehicle hit a retirement village unit, just metres away from a major shopping centre.
A witness of a catastrophic deadly truck crash at a retirement village near Toowoomba’s Clifford Gardens Shopping Centre has described the chaos at the scene.
Police say a truck travelling eastbound along James St when it collided with a Nissan X-Trail travelling in the opposite direction before crashing into a unit at the intersection with Anzac Ave, about 1.15pm.
Witnesses describe seeing the truck swerving across the road, colliding with the X-Trail and crashing into the unit at the Oxford Crest retirement village.
“We were right behind the truck,” Hope Hinkins said.
“He swerved over the traffic island and tried to break for a second,”
Ms Hinkins and her partner immediately stopped to render first aid and called for paramedics
“I was on the phone with paramedics when they arrived,” she said.
“We helped them break down a fence so they could get to the driver.”
A Queensland Ambulance unit parked across the road at Clifford Gardens was at the scene within seconds, however the driver, a man in his 50s, died at the scene.
The four people in the X-Trail were not seriously injured, while a woman who was inside the unit at the time was not injured but was treated for shock.
The cause of the crash remains unknown but the Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
