Southern Queensland’s loudest charity event to support cancer survivors had a special guest on the road, with Lockyer Valley mayor Tanya Milligan joining the 21st Cruise for Cancer.
The longstanding ride, which has raised more than $300,000 for charity since its inception, attracted a huge following of riders from across Queensland on Sunday.
The convoy left Toowoomba’s Picnic Point and travelled 250km through the Lockyer Valley.
Ms Milligan, who is the ambassador for the event and a breast cancer survivor, said she had been inspired by the work done by both the Toowoomba City Rotary Club and the Darling Downs Harley Owners Group (HOGs) to help residents with cancer and their families.
“They have been doing this every year to raise money for the Cancer Council Queensland, for the Olive McMahon Lodge and to help support families of people who are going through cancer,” she said.
“It’s an absolutely fantastic cause, because you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who has not been affected by cancer.
“These guys have raised over $300,000 over 21 years, so they are making a real difference in people’s lives.”
Event organiser Paul Hempstead said he was thrilled by the turnout considering Toowoomba’s inclement weather.
“Toowoomba has turned the weather on for us, we’ve got Gold Coast and Brisbane HOGs up here, so what a welcome to Toowoomba,” he said.
This year’s event hopes to raise $25,000, with $10,000 going to the Olive McMahon Lodge to help provide accommodation for patients and their families who live out of town and must travel into Toowoomba.
