Early Sunday storms bring respite to Toowoomba’s stifling heat with some sizeable falls recorded

Early Sunday morning rainfall not only cooled things in Toowoomba but brought some good falls to certain suburbs.

Toowoomba and surrounds received a welcome respite from the stifling heat of Saturday with an early morning downpour on Sunday.

More than a few residents were woken by howling and meowing pets about 2am Sunday when a storm past over the Garden City.

However, it appeared by official Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) figures and residents’ rain gauges the falls were patchy with some suburbs particularly on the Range side of Toowoomba receiving more than those of the western parts of the city.

According to the BOM about 44.8mm fell at the Toowoomba Airport at Wilsonton overnight to 9am Sunday but a reliable Middle Ridge correspondent to The Chronicle said he found 95mm in his rain gauge on Sunday morning.

Another Middle Ridge resident, “Mick”, reported his gauge had 86mm in at tipout on Sunday morning.

One Harristown resident reported 75mm in their gauge while in North Toowoomba one correspondent found about 22mm in their rain gauge.

And, according to the BOM Toowoomba and surrounds could expect some more falls in the early part of week with the Garden City an 80% chance of scoring between 3mm and 30mm on Monday when temperatures will range from 23 to 26 degrees.

There was an 80% chance of up to 35mm falling on Tuesday when Toowoomba was expected to have temperatures ranging from 22 to 24.

Warwick, which by BOM figures picked up 36mm overnight Saturday, could be in for another 25mm on Monday and possibly up to 60mm on Tuesday.

Dalby, which was recorded as having 18mm to 9am Sunday could also look forward to more rainfall on Monday and Tuesday when temperatures will range from 21 to 29 degrees.

Goondiwindi could expect some meaningful rainfall on Monday and Tuesday with the BOM forecasting an 80% possibility of up to 50mm on Monday and a similar chance of 60mm on Tuesday.
