Arguably the Toowoomba region’s most Aussie-centric Australia Day celebrations are set to return to Oakey’s Arthur Shooter Park on Friday, January 26.
In a full day of activities, Oakey’s Australia Day festivities will include the annual favourites of the KR Darling Downs Australian Dunny Race Titles, the Neville Cherry Pest Control Raft Regatta and Iron Man, Oakey Beef Exports Billy Kart Rally and the Oakey Family Dental Tug O War.
And, this year will also see the introduction of the Black Truck & Ag Isuzu Truck Pull.
“The truck pull involves teams of six pulling an Isuzu truck 25m with the fastest team winning,” explained Oakey Australia Day organising committee member Craig Commens.
“While the winners of the various competitions will enjoy the prestige of being champion of their respective discipline for the year, all prize money will go to the winner’s preferred club or charity.”
Mr Commens said the annual Australian Dunny Race was always a highlight of the day.
“People can get on Facebook and look up ‘Oakey Australia Day’, Like the page and see everything that’s going to happen,” he said.
“At the moment we have 10 dunnies ready to go in the Australian Dunny Race but we have a couple of dunnies that have been built that may be available to any community group who would like to race one on the day.
“So people can just send a message to the page and ask for one.”
The day’s celebrations kick off at Arthur Shooter Park, Stanley St, Oakey, from 7.30am with breakfast organised by the Oakey Lions Club with the Australia Day Awards from 8.30am.
The billy will be boiling from 9.45am followed by the day’s various competitions starting with thong throwing and sack races before the main events which run to about 12.30pm.
Plenty of food and drink stalls will be available throughout the day.
Entry is free and further information is available from the Facebook page “Oakey Australia Day”.
