The annual National Peace Conference in Toowoomba this weekend will offer attendees the chance to play a unique diversity game.

Facilitated by Pure Land Learning College, the annual free of charge Peace Conference aims to bring together the various community groups throughout the region and enhance dialogue, understanding and friendship.

Open to the public, Saturday’s conference at St Patrick’s Cathedral Centre will include a number of community speakers including a presentation by the Queensland Police Service on Youth Justice Crime.

However, another highlight will be a special presentation from three people from Singapore who will present the Diversity by Default Workshop.

“They are supported by the Singapore government and it took us some time to negotiate to bring them here,” explained Haniff Abdul Razak, director of Multifaith Multicultural Centre.

“Toowoomba is proud to be the first city to run this workshop in Australia.”

The Diversity by Default Workshop includes a card game comprising 60 carefully designed cards aimed at fostering meaningful conversation about race, religion, nationality, ethnicity, disability and mental health.

The game encourages players to engage in thoughtful discussions with one another.

“It serves as a valuable community-building tool, specifically crafted to facilitate meaningful conversations about diversity, discrimination and inclusion,” Haniff said.

“By playing this game, participants have the opportunity to develop essential distinctions, grammar, and vocabulary necessary to embrace and express the various layers of our identities.”

Saturday’s National Peace Conference at St Patrick’s Cathedral Centre, 123 Neil St, will start at 9am with registration and coffee and run to about 3.30pm.

The conference includes Q&A sessions throughout and morning tea and lunch will be available at the centre.
