Toowoomba businessman Clive Berghofer OAM has been named the 2024 Queensland Community Philanthropist of the Year at a gala event at Brisbane Town Hall on Friday.
The former mayor and semi-retired property developer is well known for his generous side, giving large sums to a wide range of community organisations, from the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation, the DownsSteam Rail Museum and QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute.
Now in their 14th year, the Queensland Philanthropy Awards raise awareness of philanthropy and giving across Queensland and celebrate those who have made an outstanding contribution to a charity, community or cause.
Queensland Give chief executive Tara Castle congratulated this year’s winners.
“Now more than ever, it’s important to highlight and celebrate the good work being done day-in, day-out by individuals, businesses, charities and community groups,” she said.
“These awards are about celebrating the extraordinary contribution of everyday Queenslanders who go above and beyond for their chosen cause, and all our nominees have demonstrated different facets of philanthropy by putting kindness, generosity and compassion into action.”
According to the judges’ comment, Mr Berghofer’s philanthropic leadership was deeply rooted in his personal journey from humble beginnings.
“To date he has donated more than $100m to charitable causes, but his commitment to the community extends beyond monetary donations,” the comments read.
“As a patron and life member of numerous organisations, Clive has generously provided his time and insights, inspiring many with his life story.”
Mr Berghofer has donated about $10m to the Royal Flying Doctors, about $61m to the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, about $230,000 to Downs Steam Railway and Museum, funding for glass-walled marquee at Clifford Park Raceway, and more than $2m to LifeFlight.
