Alan Elder loves adding to his collection of Tillandsia at his Logan home and he had the perfect avenue to do so at Bunkers Hill State School this weekend.
The tiny but mighty campus near Westbrook has raised thousands for the school’s P and C with Succulent Fest, which reached its fifth edition this year.
The celebration of hardy and drought-resistant plants drew hundreds on Sunday as one of the smaller events held during the Carnival of Flowers.
Event co-ordinator Katrina Byrd said the organising team had been thrilled by the turnout for the annual festival.
“We had a bigger than expected turnout from patrons and visitors from all over southeast Queensland,” she said.
“The school will benefit hugely from the entry donations and sausage sizzle to improve the learning environment for students and staff.
“It started out with a small group of crazy succulent people and over the years it’s grown.”
Ms Byrd said the P and C had big plans for the money.
“Our next goal is to add to our multipurpose school hall and build a canteen,” she said.
“We’ll then be able to provide catering for functions as the community of Westbrook continues to grow.”
