While some people believe the Toowoomba Rugby League’s 10-year ban on a person guilty of making a racist comment at a local game was soft, Brothers president Lizzy Adams said people should accept the TRL’s decision.

“We were hoping for a life ban but the TRL has dealt with it and it has gone through the process and 10 years is what they decided so it’s up to us to accept that,” she said.

“I think making the person go through cultural safety training is also a good thing.

“I’ve seen some comments like ‘what if it was the other way around?’ but this is not about reverse racism – racism is racism.

“Speaking as a black person who has had to deal with this sort of thing, if an Aboriginal person makes a racist comment, well, they have to be dealt with to – but racism is racism.

“And, racism is not acceptable.”

The perpetrator, who has not been publicly named, was picked up on a match video passing the comment at a game between Pittsworth and Gatton on August 7.
