In a tough and physical encounter, the Cabarlah 7th Signal Battalion were able to secure bragging rights over their Toowoomba Police rivals to retain the perpetual Brett Forte Memorial Cup in a 26-17 win.

The rugby 10s clash was a curtain opener to a full day of rugby action, including a round robin of matches between the QPS, Army and two local teams, as well as a showcase match by the Modified Rugby Program developed by GingerCloud Foundation that supports children with learning and perceptual disabilities to experience the thrill of playing rugby.

Cabarlah 7th Signal Battalion captain Eddie Dinnen said the day was special for both sides.

“You always come into a game with your set pieces planned but once you get out there it’s hard, you expect wholes to open but they just don’t give up,” he said.

“They keep going and it’s always physical.

“For us it’s important to be involved with the community and get involved with the police as well. It’s about Brett Forte and it’s never good to lose someone on the front line, both sides can agree on that.

“It’s also about creating a legacy for us younger boys as well, this game is something that we look forward to each year and be a part of. Even six months out we look forward to this game.”
