After satisfying coffee, tea, liqueur, and chocolate cravings for a decade, Coffee Works Townsville has embarked on an exciting new chapter with its massive range relocated from North Ward to Belgian Gardens.
Co-founded by husband and wife team Annie and Robert Webber in 1988, Coffee Works is a FNQ business success story, growing from a stall at Cairns’ Rusty’s Markets to have five stores, including their head office “mothership” in Mareeba.
The stores offer a huge range of locally produced coffee beans, largely sourced within a 10km radius of Mareeba, alongside one of Australia’s largest ranges of international single origin beans and blends.
Their offering has expanded over the years to include handmade chocolates, teas, liqueurs, coffee making equipment, and giftwares, backed by a popular postal delivery service.
Ms Webber said the move from 47 Gregory St to 49 Bundock St, came about after Hotel Allen’s new owners sought to reclaim part of their building during the renovation process currently underway.
“We basically moved over in one day, trading on June 17th on Gregory St, and 18th at Belrowes Place … so we didn’t miss a day,” Ms Webber said.
“We felt that it was quite a risk to move because Gregory Street is such a fabulous precinct … but the guest feedback has been really overwhelming and positive.
“People are coming in saying its so much easier for them with the parking … and we’re much easier to find with our road signage more prominent.”
She said there had been plenty of new faces and people detouring from their usual routes into the city to call in, remarking on the brighter, more spacious interior.
The business has never been afraid to change things up and innovate, striking a chord with the coffee-loving community through its stronger Jolt range of beans, decaffeinated and organic varieties, and for enabling customers to customise their bean blends.
Every Easter at Coffee Works is “off the chain”, thanks to their Mareeba-based chocolatiers, who were always coming out with new handmade creations, including the popular Seas the Day reef-themed chocolate bars – where chocolate Nemos and Dorys now hung from the ceiling.
“We’ve got a big range of 90 teas for tea lovers, including green teas, flavoured green teas, classic black teas, oolongs, chai, and Aveda (organic caffeine-free) teas,” she said.
“We also have a range of homewares, vases and cups and Buddhas and all sorts of other things, a range of coffee making machinery, which we call our weapons, and the very fabulous personal plunger mug, which you can just take anywhere.”
