AN AMBITIOUS online petition has been launched to transform the Warrego Hwy between Toowoomba and Roma into a four-lane highway.

The petition and associated Facebook page have been created by Dalby resident Sharon McEvoy.

Ms McEvoy said the condition of the highway and a recent spike in heavy traffic was putting "citizens, residents and workers in the Surat Basin at risk".

"Too many people have died over the past few years, when attempting to overtake slow moving vehicles," she said.

"This presents an unacceptable level of risk for road users."

Ms McEvoy also said that businesses were also suffering a loss in productivity.

"Local businesses and enterprises are suffering as their staff and customers are held up in long commutes, particularly between Toowoomba, Dalby and Chinchilla," she said.

"This is hampering productivity in our area."

The petition calls on the state and federal governments to work together to upgrade the highway to a dual carriageway.

"Save lives, improve commute times and reinvest money into this region which is helping our economy so much," the petition reads.
