Students from Townsville’s Calvary Christian College are ready to fire up for the 4WD Central Townsville BBQ Battle competition.
The student team, appropriately named ‘Holy Smoke’, is made up of year 9 to 12 students keen to showcase their culinary skills as they cook and smoke various meats hoping to beat 14 other teams and come out on top.
Grade 12 student Jeremy Marsh said he heard about the school’s BBQ club and was keen to get in on the action.
I thought it would be fun and something I would enjoy,” he said.
“I am excited for the competition on Saturday.”
Fellow grade 12 student Isabella Hay said joining the team furthered her interests in BBQing.
“We’ve been working on perfecting the flavours with different rubs and sauces, how they work with each other and what tastes the best,” she said.
“I had an interest in BBQing before, it’s something I love to do with my family. Being able to do it at school is awesome.”
The group, who are the only student team, are up against the best meat smoking and BBQing teams in the country, as well as a team from the US.
Teams must cook five proteins including chicken, lamb, pork ribs, beef ribs and brisket over the course of the day.
The Calvary students have been preparing for the competition in their weekly BBQ Club, as part of the College’s co-curricular clubs held every Friday.
The Townsville BBQ Battle is set to be a fun-filled family day with food, drinks and kids rides, with over 5000 expected to attend.
The BBQ Battle will be held at Melvilles Entertainment, Alligator Creek on June 1 from 10am to 7:30pm. Entry is free.
