Six arrested at after high speed alleged stolen car pursuit

Six juveniles have been taken into custody and charged by police after a dramatic highway joyride in Far North Queensland that ended after officers deployed tyre spikes.

Six juveniles have been taken into custody at Palm Cove after a dramatic pursuit down the Captain Cook Highway from Port Douglas.

The allegedly stolen car was reported to be driving dangerously and travelling 100km/h in a 60km zone.

A tyre deflation device was successfully set up between Ellis Beach and Palm Cove, a police spokeswoman said.

“It does look like they got a good sting just after 3pm,” she said.

The vehicle continued on and was eventually dumped on Harper Street. The six allegedly fled the stricken car before leading officers on a foot chase through Palm Cove.

Police allege the group was driving a Subaru station wagon allegedly stolen from an Atherton residence on Sunday, March 10.

At 3.26pm officers reported all six had been apprehended outside the Alamanda Palm Cove resort at the corner of Veivers Rd and Williams Esplanade.

A police brawler van has been sent to collect the alleged offenders that were handcuffed and seated on the footpath outside Chill at Portofino.

A 16-year-old Mareeba girl was charged with two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and one count each of burglary, entering a premises and drug possession.

A 14-year-old Atherton girl was charged with entering a premises and two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

A 13-year-old Mareeba boy was charged with two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

A 14-year-old Mareeba boy was charged with two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and one count of unlicensed driving.

A 13-year-old Mareeba girl was charged with stealing, entering a dwelling, wilful damage, and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

All five are scheduled to appear in the Cairns Children’s Court at a later date.

A 14-year-old Mutchilba girl was charged with entering a dwelling an unlawful use of a motor vehicle. She was dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justices Act.

So far this month 22 vehicles have been stolen within the greater Cairns area between Gordonvale and Palm Cove to make a running total this year of 114 cars.
