Water police have released a photo appealing for information about the vessel, which was spotted sinking on Saturday, halfway between Low Isles and Batt Reef off Port Douglas.

The boat, spotted by a tourist helicopter, is an 8m sailing vessel.

Police do not believe anyone was on-board at the time it sunk.

The boat was first spotted at 10.10am, with a local boatie arriving on scene a short time later.

Police believe the vessel may have come adrift from its moorings or anchor, as the mast was disabled and tied to the foredeck of the vessel, so not in a condition to sail.

On Tuesday police released new images of the make and model in the hope the new owners would come forward.

“Water Police would like to speak to the old or new owners to confirm their safety and urge anyone who recognised the vessel to contact police,” a spokesman said.

The owners of the yacht or anyone who recognises the vessel or has further information have been urged to contact police.

Boaties have also raised navigational concerns after the yacht was seen half floating with the bow sticking up out of the water.
“Just wondering if there’s any plans to remove this thing, fortunately it was dead calm today, but a bit of chop and id never have seen it,” a skipper posted on social media earlier this week.
