An elderly woman is trapped inside her car after the vehicle veered off the highway and into a creek south of Cairns.

Emergency services were called to a reported single-vehicle incident involving a woman in her 70s – the driver – on the Bruce Hwy, at 4.30pm on Wednesday.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said the woman was trapped in the car, which had veered off into knee deep water at The Junction Creek Bridge.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed fire and rescue crews were assisting with the entrapment and the patient was stable.

She said the woman had complained of pelvic, leg and back pain.

It’s understood while it was reported to emergency services as the car departing the highway at 100km/h, there crash is not impacting traffic.
