Cops pull over allegedly dangerous hoons

Police are warning drivers to be vigilant after three high-speed hoons were allegedly caught driving at incredibly reckless speeds on the Bruce Highway.

In three separate incidents over three days in April, a trio of motorists were alleged to have been driving at speeds over 150km/h, with the fastest clocked at 178km/h.

When police pulled over the worst alleged offender, a 30-year-old Mooroobool man, and asked him how fast he thought he was going, he simply replied, “115?”

His guess was short by over 60km/h, according to the police speed gun.

The alleged offending took place over a single weekend in April.

On Friday April 12, a 37-year-old Bungalow man was allegedly driving an unregistered car at 151km/hr in a 100km/hr zone on the Bruce Highway at Bellenden Kerr.

The next day, police say a 29-year-old Bentley Park woman was driving at 157km/h in a 100km/hr zone on the Bruce Highway at Mirriwinni.

Finally, on April 14, the 30-year-old Mooroobool man was detected driving at 178km/hr on the Bruce Highway at Babinda.

All three motorists were issued with traffic infringement notices for exceeding the speed limit by more than 40km/hr, and issued with fines of between $1780 and $2260.

Eight people have died on Far Northern roads so far in 2024, and police urged drivers to act responsibly.

“Officers are continuing high visibility patrols and speed enforcement operations, and are encouraging everyone in the community to do their part to reduce road trauma,” a Queensland Police statement said.
