A highway has reopened and five people, including children have been hospitalised following a single-vehicle rollover in Far North Queensland.

Emergency services responded to the single-vehicle rollover near Lakeland, 250km north of Cairns around 3.30pm on Wednesday.

The QGAir Rescue 510 helicopter was requested for assistance.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed an adult and child were transported by road to Cooktown hospital, while three children were transported via helicopter to Cairns hospital.

“Everyone is pretty stable, but due to the number of patients, we had to split transport,” the spokeswoman said.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman confirmed the Mulligan Highway reopened to traffic around 6.15pm.

“The highway is now open and both crews are heading back to the station,” he said.

Earlier, a Queensland Ambulance Services spokeswoman confirmed one adult male and four children had been assessed by paramedics for minor injuries following a single-vehicle rollover on the Mulligan Highway.

“The children range in age from four years old to a male in his early teens,” the spokeswoman said.

“There are no huge injuries at this stage, the chopper may have been called out due to the remote location.”

She confirmed at least one child did not appear to be injured.

“There’s one patient with a minor head injury, one with chest pain, one with rib pain and one with back pain,” she said.

A Queensland Police Services spokeswoman confirmed crews were on the ground to direct traffic.

“The road has been closed while the helicopter is on the ground,” the spokeswoman said.
