South-easterly surge brings unseasonal rain to Cairns

A south-easterly surge more commonly experienced during the wet season is making for a wet weekend in Cairns.

A south-easterly surge is bringing unexpected rain to Cairns, with a wet weekend on the cards.

Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist said a south-easterly wind was brining showers but there was also a south-easterly surge contributing to heavier rain.

“It has certainly come back wet, overnight, and it will be wet again today,” Mr Hine said.

From 9am on Friday, 23.8mm of rain has been recorded at Cairns Airport and 29.8mm at Cairns Racecourse, he said.

is an enhanced surge of winds that often comes with a line of cloud and heavier showers, from the ocean to land, weakening as it moves inland,” Mr Hine explained.

“We get those reasonably often through the wet season, not as often at this time of year.”

The temperature today is forecast to reach 26 degrees with a very high chance of showers, with the same predicted for Sunday, but slightly less wind.

There is a medium chance of showers on Monday and Tuesday.
