Two occupants of a vehicle reportedly had to climb on to the roof of their car after crashing into a Far North waterway, while awaiting the help of emergency services.

Emergency services were called to the Captain Cook Hwy, between Holloways Beach and Yorkeys Knob about 11.15am on Monday following the single-vehicle crash.

A Queensland Fire Department spokesman said at 11.20am one crew was on scene where the vehicle had entered the waterway, stating the water was “up to the wheels.”

He said QFD wasn’t required to rescue either of the two occupants who were in the hands of paramedics.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said the occupants were two adults who appeared to have no injuries.

They were assessed at the scene and not taken to hospital.

He said while there were reports they were waiting on the roof of their vehicle, there were no reports of a rescue and they had climbed out of the creek and into the care of paramedics when they arrived “shortly after 11am.”

At 12pm a Queensland Police spokeswoman said officers had left the scene and were no longer involved in traffic management, after the incident had previously blocked one lane of the highway.

It’s understood the vehicle was a dual-cab LDV utility and had been towed by 12.15pm.

While there was no suggestion wet weather was a factor in the crash, it came as the region braced for significant rainfall totals for the first half of this week.

“The first half of the week will be particularly wet, with daily rainfall potentially reaching 200mm in some areas,” Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Felim Hanniffy said.
