Cairns weather: Far North in for drizzly end to the week

The Far North is in for a drizzly and wet end to the week as the Bureau predicts falls of up to 70mm south of Cairns, with the chance of thunderstorms.

The Far North is in for a drizzly and wet end to the week as the Bureau of Meteorology predicts falls of up to 70mm south of Cairns, along with the chance of thunderstorms.

BoM meteorologist Patch Clapp said a low pressure trough was still stretching across the Far North, driving showers across the region, particularly along the Coral Sea coastline.

“The wet weather is driven by a combination of this low pressure trough across the peninsular as well as the convergence of the southerly and south-easterly winds pushing up the coast,” Mr Clapp said.

“What we will see is more sustained light to moderate rainfall, particularly through the area of Innisfail south to the Burdekin.”

“There is the possibility of some more isolated heavy falls with multi-day totals over 100mm but again mostly along the coastal regions.”

Falls of up to 30mm are ­expected for Cairns on Friday, and showers are to remain likely but easing into the weekend.

The heaviest falls are likely further south along the Cassowary Coast. Innisfail may receive up to 70mm on Friday and a further 50mm into Saturday before easing slightly to end the weekend.

On the Tablelands, falls of up to 15mm are still expected, however heavier showers are likely to fall along the coast.

Temperatures will remain warm with highs along the coast of 31 and 32 degrees with slightly cooler temperatures in the Tablelands at Atherton reaching 26 to 28 degrees.

Mr Clapp said that ex-cyclone Lincoln had now moved well off the WA coast and was no longer affecting the weather in Queensland.
