A person has been killed in a terrifying collision between a truck and a car on a major highway.

A person has been killed in a horror collision between a truck and a car on a major Queensland highway.

The two vehicles collided on the Bruce Highway near Emmett Creek - about 30 minutes south of Townsville - just before 2pm on Sunday.

The driver of the MG car was alone in the vehicle and died at the scene.

The truck driver was not physically injured.

Debris from the collision struck a third vehicle, but all occupants escaped unscathed.

Forensic Crash Unit investigations into the circumstances of the collision are ongoing.

Three teams of paramedics - including advanced and critical care specialists - were on scene, along with two Queensland Fire and Emergency crews.

The Bruce Highway was closed in both directions and motorists were urged to avoid the area after the crash. The route has since been reopened.

Any witnesses or anyone with relevant dashcam vision is urged to contact police.
