Outspoken North Queensland politician Bob Katter has slammed the government over the readiness of the Australian Defence Force and outlined his bold plan to protect the country.

Last week, former Northern Territory Chief Minister and CEO of Hancock Agriculture Adam Giles said Australia should adopt 5 per cent GDP defence spending but Mr Katter believed it should be “three times that amount”.

Australia currently spend about 2 per cent of the GDP on defence.

After the bombing of nuclear sites in Iran over the weekend, Mr Katter said there was an urgent needs for Australia to enhance it’s defence capabilities.

His bold plan was to create a “fortress wall” of missiles and rockets.

“If Australia, in a situation that is now arising, is to stand and defend itself then we need a fortress wall,” he said.

“A fortress in our day and age are missiles and rockets.”

“If people like myself get my way, and I think ultimately I will, every single boy in the country at 14 years of age gets a combat rifle and it’s kept in the school armoury,” he said.

“Girls too, if they want.

“ … Then you’ve got a five or six million-man guerrilla army waiting for you and that makes a very, very formidable barrier and protection for our nation which we don’t have today.

Mr Katter said an issue pertinent to Australia was “Chinese warships circling Australia”.

“We have no ability to confront those warships,” he said.

Innisfail veteran Paul Rodgers said he was concerned that with the upcoming 80th anniversary of the end of WWII, it seemed as if in 2025, the country still cannot defend itself.

“Every side of the government has let Australians down,” he said.

“We live in uncertain times, you only have to watch the news now to know that things aren’t real good and this country is not ready to go.”

Mr Rodger also said Australia needs to address several issues, including fuel reserves, something that he said should have been done years ago.

“There’s 1000 different things that we need to address, and we need to address them now and we’re not,” he said.

“We are retiring our Anzac class frigates and our new frigates aren’t even on the horizon.”

“The Americans have asked us to up our defence spending, and the government at the moment is refusing to do it.”

“We’re going to get caught short and Australian’s need to be really concerned.”
