Bec and Flynn Hyslop won the competition for their stay at Kakadu Lodge & Caravan Park in August.

The couple, along with their three kids aged 15, 13, and five, and Flynn’s mother Jill, were on a year-long adventure across Australia.

The family left home in January, travelling through Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia before making it to the Territory for a two months stay.

The ambition this time was to explore the Red Centre, which they didn’t get out to on a previous visit while Kakadu and the Yellow Water boat cruise were other highlights.

Ms Hyslop was the instigator to entering the competition and her insistence led the family to the winning entry.

“I was so amazed to win, I had a feeling this would be a special thing for us and while the rest of the family weren’t on board I knew we would enter,” Ms Hyslop said.

“I put in lots of entries and at the start we thought we had won the $500 fuel voucher, which we would have been over the moon about, but then we found out we were the actual winning entry.

“Our highlights were definitely Uluru, we managed to hit that right on the harvest moon which we didn’t realise was happening but was a really spectacular sight.”

The competition, launched in partnership between Tourism NT and Caravan Industry Association of Australia, was designed to inspire domestic drive travellers to choose the Northern Territory as their holiday destination.

Running for the first time from May to September this year, it offered adventurous Australians the opportunity to explore the NT, incentivising dispersal to its regions by booking at one of the NT’s five regional visitor information centres.

The campaign garnered more than 55,900 separate unique entries, inspiring travellers from across the country to explore the NT’s iconic landscapes.

The grand prize – a draw to win either $10,000 or $1m – was picked at the Darwin Waterfront on Wednesday morning, with the Hyslops walking away with the $10k prize.

Tourism Department chief executive Suzana Bishop congratulated the Hyslops.

“We’re thrilled and not surprised to hear their whole family had a wonderful time in the NT,” she said.

“A road trip is always a great escape, but a road trip through the Territory is something extraordinary, from its rugged outback to lush waterfalls and vibrant urban hubs like Darwin – there is something for everyone in our beautiful NT.”

Caravan Industry Association of Australia said the competition was a “fabulous partnership” between industry and government to help increase tourism bookings throughout the Territory.

“There is so much to see and do in the Territory and it should be a bucket list item, for young and old, and many times over,” chief executive Stuart Lamont said.

“Congratulations to the family, it looks as if they embraced a NT road trip adventure and had an amazing time while doing it.”
