A NEW airport will get mining machinery operator Brodie Cosgriff off the roads and into the sky - something he and wife Bec are both eager to see happen.

The couple and their young family live almost at the doorstep of Wellcamp Airport, making the five-minute trip to the open day well worth the effort.

"It's going to be great for me when it's finished," Mr Cosgriff said.

"At the moment I'm working seven days on, seven days off out near Moranbah.

"It means I have to drive 10 hours each way every week.

"When this is up and running, I'll have a five-minute drive and then an hour-and-a-half flight to work."

Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Greg Johnson said his open-day stall had been beset by interest from a variety of industries, not just the energy sector.

"We've had people who grow seedlings, milk producers and people from all kinds of agricultural industries," he said.

"They're all saying they can see strong export opportunities that haven't existed here before."
