Wellcamp Airport update

WELLCAMP Airport's terminal is three months from completion with the internal fit-out due to begin next week.

Work crews are preparing to install the glass panels which will envelop the 8000sq m structure.

A tour through the sprawling Wagners worksite yesterday revealed just how far along construction has come ahead of the airport's first flights scheduled for October.

More than half of the 2.87km runway has been sealed with only a final layer of asphalt remaining before it becomes operational.

The 36,000sq m aprons and taxiway pavements will be coated in Wagners' earth-friendly concrete - a Toowoomba-designed substance whose production creates up to 70 per cent fewer green emissions than its traditional alternative, Portland cement.

A company spokesman explained the substance was more durable than asphalt and could stand up to the increased pressure created by turning and stationary aircraft.

The spokesman further revealed the airport would not use air bridges - the moveable connector which joins an aircraft's door to the terminal - in a bid to keep down ticket prices.

Provisions for air bridges may be made in the second stage of construction.

No airlines have yet signed on the dotted line but an announcement is expected in the coming weeks.
